Lawrence NY Yellow Pages

Lawrence is a village home in the southwestern portion of Hempstead and is in the famous Five Towns which includes the villages of Cedarhurst and the hamlets Hewletts, Inwood, and Woodmere. The village is home to 6,522 people as reported by the 2000 census. The real answer to how Lawrence received its name is found from tales and rumors with one being it was named to honor James Lawrence a naval hero, while another states the name came from landowners in the area Alfred and Newbold Lawrence. In the 1850’s, the Lawrence brothers purchased land which brought others from New York that built summer homes. On September 13, 1897, Lawrence became incorporated.

Lawrence Public Schools is home to three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school that also serves the communities of North Woodmere, some sections of Woodmere, Atlantic Beach, Inwood, and Cedarhurst. The village is home to fine dining, its own club house, offering a yacht basin, tennis court, and golf course. The most popular attraction in Lawrence is the Rock Hall Museum offering thousands of artifacts that are here on loan from collectors and artists from across the globe. Shopping is also a great pastime along Central Avenue where you can find a variety of shops and eateries.
